We are a group of students from International School of Romania and Cheltenham Ladies' College, UK. All of us were fortunate enough to live in safe countries, where our greatest concern is not whether we can bring clean water home, but rather how difficult our next exam will be. We were privileged enough not to be in their position, and we should also be grateful enough to help them as much as possible. For this reason, we have decided to use our privilege to support others and contribute to a better future.
In early 2025, we came together with a shared idea of creating a charitable project in East Africa. We were fortunate enough to have a teacher in our school who worked for charity organisations in Rwanda and was able to vouch for their reliability. However, it took weeks of meetings with the actual organisation to learn about the help that was needed most. We organised fundraising stands at school events and managed to gather enough funds to pay for a well in Kabula, Uganda. This secured clean drinking water for over 3,000 villagers in a region where waterborne diseases and droughts plague local communities.
After the success of our first project, we remained determined and continued organising fundraisers. We managed to open our second well in Kakira, Uganda. We also supplied 400 reusable sanitary pads to students at Makamu High School in Wakiso District, Uganda, helping improve menstrual hygiene, dignity and school attendance.
We have created NIA with the aim of simplifying the long-term process of finding reliable local organisations and facilitating communication with these respectable charities. We hope to collaborate with schools and students from different countries and regions in order to expand our outreach. We plan to further support people in developing countries with the help of local NGOs in areas ranging from water safety to education.
